Perlane and Restylane
A Safer and Better alternative to Botox

Perlane and Restylane are an exciting new group of filler materials.
In cosmetic surgery, answers have long been sought for problems of fine lines about the face such as wrinkles of the upper lip, glabella frown lines (wrinkles between the eyebrows) and "crows feet" around the eyes. The new hyaluronic acid based substances such as Perlane and Restylane have been widely and effectively used in Canada and Europe.

Hyaluronic acid (hyaluronase), the basis of the Perlane and Restylane injection is found throughout the body as the gel that connects human cells. Hyaluronic acid usage has been developed by Q-Med in Sweden. They have been able to stabilize the molecules of hyaluronic acid by cross-linking them.

For the potential cosmetic surgery patient, Perlane or Restylane offers a promising solution.

  1. As opposed to currently used filler materials of long-standing, hyaluronic acid based filler materials do not require a skin test or a 30 day waiting period. This means the patient can come in and have Perlane or Restylane injections the day of their office visit.
  2. Another advantage of the hyaluronic acid based filler material is that it is long lasting and can last up to 6 or 7 months. The thicker Perlane version can last up to one year.

Side effects of injection are the common ones found with fillers currently in use such as redness and swelling for a day or two. Adverse reactions have been infrequent and self-limiting. In about one out of every two thousand injections, redness and swelling can last up to 2 to 4 weeks but will disappear.

In a simple procedure, Restylane® is injected directly into mid-to-deep dermis for long-lasting correction of facial wrinkles and folds. Results from a typical Restylane treatment have been documented to last for about six months. However, individual results may vary.
