Periodontal specialists specialize in the diagnostics and treatment of disease in gums, bone and the tissues that surround the teeth. This is one of the most common diseases in the world population is periodontal disease which is case by the accumulation of plaque, a sticky film of food and bacteria that forms constantly on the teeth. If plaque is not properly removed every day it mineralizes and turns into tartar, if tartar is not properly removed it may lead to gingivoplasy if not treated it will eventually lead to periodontal disease.

The treatments for periodontal decease depend on the stage:

  • In the case of moderate stage: root planning

  • In the case of a more advance stage: open flap surgery

To determine the stage of the disease the doctor measures the depth of the gums with a periodontal probe.

What about loss of teeth?

Loss of a tooth or teeth can have multiple consequences, such as loss of self esteem and confidence, but more importantly, to your heath and well being, your jaw bone and gums recede creating a deformed facial structure. The loss of teeth, of course impairs your ability to chew food and that can lead to digestive problems.

Most people think of dental implants as a cosmetic procedure, it is, but more importantly it is a reconstruction of the jaw bone naturally by providing a new root for the bone to regenerate around. Take a look at some the damage that can result from the loss of teeth.

Facial Structure Collapse or a Perfect Smile?

When all of the teeth are missing, the bone which previously supported the teeth, melts away, or resorbs. The result of this deterioration is facial structure collapse and visible aging. Dental implants allow reconstruction with stable, comfortable replacement teeth and virtually stop future bone loss, maintaining the integrity of facial structures and a natural appearance.

Gingivectomy/Gingivoplasy

Gingivectomy/gingivoplasty are surgical procedures that are used to correct the gingiva (soft tissue or gums) that surround the tooth. Deformities are reshaped and reduced. Normal form, health, and appearance are restored to to the gum tissues.

A gingivectomy is a periodontal procedure which eliminates excess gum

There are several reasons why a gingivectomy would be needed. Oftentimes, gingivectomies are utilized for cosmetic reasons;

Gingivectomies are also used to remove excess gum tissue (gingival hyperplasia) that has formed as a result of certain drugs, such as anti-seizure medications, organ-transplant medications, and certain high blood pressure medications.

Finally, gingivectomies have been used to shrink deep gum pockets (see section on periodontal disease), although most of the time more than just the removal of gum tissue is warranted to repair deep pockets.

The procedure itself is very straightforward.  The affected areas are anesthetized, and then the excess gum tissue is removed - either with a scalpel blade or a laser.  (Both the scalpel and the laser each have their own pros and cons, and the technique used is primarily based

on the surgeon's preference.)

The surgical sites will be sore for 24-48 hours, and medication will be provided to alleviate any discomfort experienced.  A week follow-up appointment is usually needed to ensure proper healing.

The gingivectomy is a predictable, easy, and safe procedure with results that can last a lifetime.

Periodontics

Although general dentistry, orthodontics and oral surgery are commonly recognized, periodontics is an important area of treatment that also needs to be addressed. Periodontal disease is characterized by inflammation and bacterial infection of the gums. It is usually painless and progresses slowly. Most people are unaware that they have periodontal disease and may not seek treatment until they notice that their teeth are loose or that they have chronic bad breath.

When people have moderate to advanced gum disease throughout their mouth, it is the equivalent of having an infected “wound” covering the same amount of surface area as the back of their forearm. As the bacteria accumulates under the gums, they produce toxins which destroy the bone that supports the teeth.

These bacteria can also spread through the bloodstream to other parts of the body, such as the blood vessels of the heart. Bacterial infections originating in the mouth and affecting the heart are nothing new to medicine.

Researchers have found that people suffering from periodontal disease are twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease as those without periodontal disease. Coronary artery disease is a type of heart disease in which the walls of the heart’s blood vessels gradually thicken due to the buildup of cholesterol plaque.

Risk factors and warning signs:

The mouth contains a large number and variety of bacteria that form a sticky film called plaque. In this film, the bacteria that cause periodontal diseases create toxins which irritate the gums and bones.

Even if you brush and floss every day, you may not completely remove plaque, especially around the gum line. Therefore, everyone has at least a small risk for periodontal disease. However, there are certain factors that increase this risk — discuss them with Dr. Ochoa.
